Project Overview
Morley Meadow Primary School formerly known as Plymstock School is a two form entry school built on behalf of Persimmon Homes. It has the capacity for 450 students but initially it will be used for up to 225 students and office space for the Trust.
It is a steel framed building on piled foundations. The external façade consists of brick, render and cladding panels on a metal framed wall system. The building is naturally ventilated and has large areas of glass giving it a light airy feel. There is a large hall with climbing frame and stage lighting. Part of the school is to be used as offices for Westcountry Schools Trust who run the schools in the area.
The building also offers community space both inside and out with the addition of an artificial pitch. The external environment has wildlife areas, amphitheatre, hard and soft landscaping and on site parking facilities.
This is our second project collaborating with Persimmon Homes and illustrates our commitment to building long term relationships, which is one of our key values.

With over 1600 homes being constructed around the school and with no other local amenity like this close by, it will add a great space for the community to hire make use of.
This built also adds value as it is a school with greater capacity for the new local housing development.
Regeneration is important and replacing an old tired school building with a brand new one in the local area is a key factor for the success of students.

Covid 19 constraints. Having to build at a slower rate, delaying the build programme.
Communication and engagement with the supply chain and key stakeholders was essential. We did this so we could understand the challenges and impacts. Through honesty and working together, the team progressed with the build and were aligned.
The location of the school is in a large, disused quarry with no infrastructure around it other than the old quarry bed. Management of dust and safe access across the quarry was very important.
We overcame this by ensuring a suitable haul road was installed and maintained and during dry or windy periods, dust suppression techniques applied. This worked and eliminated complaints from local residents.
Challenging ground conditions. The school was constructed within an old quarry with rocky grounds and engineered levels.
We found an alternative piling solution to overcome the variable ground conditions which allowed for short sections of piling and deeper sections. The solution also offered great environmental benefit as it was reusing disused oil rig pipes.
