Project Overview

This prestigious 66 bedroom care home in Exeter was constructed from traditional masonry construction over four levels with lower ground floor encompassing back of house staff, laundry and kitchen areas.

The three upper levels ground, first and second  floor have patient bedrooms, lounges and break out areas, salon and hair dressing facilities.

Front and rear balconies lead out from the lounge areas make the best view from the elevated home position with spectacular views across Exeter to the EX estuary to the south, and landscaped gardens to the front and rear.

This care home, set in beautiful grounds, provides high quality care services, as well as dedicated dementia care for the residents in the memory lane  section on the first floor.

Added Value

We were delighted to have constructed another luxury care home and we are proud to have worked with Barchester to deliver their extensive programme of high quality, purpose-built care homes across the UK.

Barchester required a marketing suite to be opened 10 weeks prior to completion which we completed successfully.

With handing over this project effectively and having shared values with Barchester Care we look forward to building a long and successful partnership with this valued customer that can trust us.

The new care home is an important facility for the district and will give a boost to the employment in neighbouring communities.

Challenges and Solutions

When we started this project, ground conditions at the time of build proved extremely difficult. Work around the sand like and grainy soil was testing and we experienced the worst rainfall since 1923. This was a challenge for us as it could have meant a cost in time and efficiency.

Despite this challenge we worked closely with our sub-contractors and overcame the torrential rain by installing a filtered drainage system which dewatered the site and enabled us to carry on with the project. This also meant no valuable time was lost.

A common challenge we faced was the effects the global pandemic had on all businesses in March 2020. Despite our wanting to keep our sites open and projects rolling, we knew that in order to keep everyone safe we had to take the action of closing the down the site for 3 weeks. This was so we could prepare and transform our site with covid isolation and separation rules, cleaning stations and cleaning regime. However, it really effected our schedules and project timeline massively which ultimately had a knock-on effect for our client.

Although this challenge was inevitable, ensuring that we had no further delays to the project was key and with COVID regulations in place this meant that we could re-open and continue work in a safe environment.

Overall, our main challenge for this project had been time and ensuring there were no delays in the project s difficult. However, with great communication and relationships built on trust, with both sub-contractors and our customer we were able to produce a fantastic care home for guests to enjoy.
